New Sustainable Stickers!

“Every day between the sink, show and toilet, the average American uses 50 gallons of water.  Turn off the water when brushing your teeth.  Some estimates have this action saving more than 2,000 gallons per year.  Last year the SU campus used more than 301,263,732 gallons of water.  While 2,000 gallons may not seem like a lot, imagine if everyone saved the same amount.”


“Don’t rely on your hall mates to do the job for –– always check that the lint cache is clean.  This improves air circulation and requires less energy to dry your clothing.”


These are the new stickers George Athanas, Assistant Director of ORL gave me today during our interview.  They will be placed in all resident halls in the coming weeks to help promote sustainability.

Green Report Card

This week I've been researching the college sustainability report card.  Syracuse University received an overall grade of "B", but what I was most interested in was its grade of "C" for student involvement.  I've been talking with freshman in the dorms and finding out if they were actually orientated when they came to SU to be sustainable (interviews to be posted tomorrow.)
  I've been in contact with the assistant director of ORL at SU and have a scheduled interview for Friday.  Although it's late, he's a busy man and has agreed to meet with me to help me get the facts straight.
  Are freshman really being told the do's and don't of the dorms to help save energy on campus?  Is the program effective, or are students too excited to be away from home and really don't care about saving a few extra seconds of running water or recycling that water bottle.

Buying a Hybrid Sets a Green Example

Here are some of the pictures from my second story!  The black SUV is owned by ESF's President Murphy, and the two other cars I found parked on campus.  As I was doing my research, on one stroll through the quad, past archbold and up to ESF I counted seven hybrids parked...pretty impressive!

Can You Turn Orange Into Green?

My first story of my beat has been written, emailed to Prof. Davis and returned to me.  I would say for a first story it was a "minor" success.  I feel like I haven't done reporting in so long so I am finally starting to get into the swing of things again.  Being abroad for a semester and doing very little interviewing and REAL story writing really put me off track.  I ended up talking to some interesting people for my recycling story, including a few students on campus, employees of People's Place, members of the SU Sustainability Department and a representative from OCRRA.  All in all, it's done and over with and my next story is in the works. (much more exciting and with a twist!)  I will also attempt to improve my blogging skills as my stories improve too !! :)
